The brake pads have an abrasive coating in order to ensure that a brake pad's surface quickly adjusts to that of the brake discs.
While breaking in new pads you may hear a screeching sound when braking. This sound will disappear once you have driven a few miles. Remember that it is advised to brake in new pads and discs gently.
