Yleinen merkki siitä, että jarrusatula on vaihdettava, on jos auto vetää sivuun jarrutettaessa tai jarrupalat kuluvat enemmän jossain pyörässä.
Jos jarrusatulan mäntä ei liiku niin kuin sen pitäisi, se voi heikentää jarrutustehoa ja saada Volvosi kulkemaan vinoon jarrutettaessa. Jos jarrusatulassa oleva mäntä juuttuu ulompaan aktiiviseen asentoon sen sijaan, että se liukuisi takaisin jarrutuksen jälkeen, aiheuttaa se ylimääräistä kulumista jarrupaloihin ja joskus myös jarrulevyjen vääntymistä.
Yksi vinkki on vaihtaa myös jarruletku jarrusatulan vaihdon yhteydessä. Oikea jarruletku malleihin Volvo 140, 240, 740, 940, 850, S70, V70, C70, C30, S40, S60, S80, V40, V60, V90, XC60, XC70, XC90 on saatavana jarrusatulan lisävarusteena.
